40 Amazingly Colorized Images from the 1903 Winter Palace Ball in St. Petersburg

The 1903 ball held at the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg, during the reign of Emperor Nicholas II, was a lavish event. It took place on February 11 and 13 and featured guests dressed in opulent 17th-century style costumes, designed by artist Sergey Solomko and historical experts.

1903 Costume Ball in the Winter Palace

The Imperial family, dressed in elaborate 17th-century attire, with Tsar Nicholas as Alexis and Tsaritsa Alexandra as Maria Miloslavskaya, posed for a photograph in the Hermitage Theatre. Many of them were wearing priceless original pieces from the Kremlin, which were brought specifically for this occasion. It was to be their last photograph together.
