Amitabh Bachchan made a cameo appearance in filmmaker Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 film The Great Gatsby. The Indian megastar made such an impression on the director that he is still charmed by Big B’s charisma. As he promotes his upcoming movie ElvisBaz said that in his opinion, Amitabh Bachchan is “not only the Elvis of India but also the Marlon Brando of India.”
In Elvis, Tom Hanks plays the role of Elvis Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker. In an interview with NDTV, Baz compared Tom and Big B’s aura, saying, “Tom Hanks is easily the amitabh bachchan America and I mean it.” The director said he keeps talking about the Sholay star because “I miss him so much.”
Baz Luhrmann further said that Amitabh Bachchan and Tom Hanks are very similar artists. “I think of him and I think of Tom, they are very similar. Amitabh would bring not only his performance to the set, but also the energy, inspiration and wisdom. I saw him on the sets of The Great Gatsby. I remember a moment between him and Leonardo and it was a quiet talk. He knew that Leonardo felt that he was listening to wisdom and Tom did exactly that with Austin in Elvis. It’s so moving and so rare when an older actor passes the baton to a new generation,” he said.
Elvis, starring Austin Butler in the title role, premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it received a 12-minute standing ovation. Austin has received high praise for his performance in the film. As of now, the film has a rating of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 108 reviews.
Elvis opens in Indian theaters on June 24.
