Second-hand hardware is a rite of passage for even the most diehard tech fanatics, so sometimes a child may receive an old iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Here’s how to create their own Apple ID for them and add it to your family.

Apple IDs are essential to help Apple and apps differentiate users, and an Apple ID is required to make App Store purchases and sign up for iCloud. Both of these things are part and parcel of using an iOS device, so even if you hand an old device to a child, they will need an Apple ID to actually use it. Don’t leave your Apple ID logged in for them, it just creates trouble.

Once you have successfully created a new Apple ID for your child, you can link it to your “family”, which means that you will be in control and all payments from the App Store will be processed via the method of your choice.
