Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Her mother, Vernita Lee, was a domestic worker who became pregnant but was not married at the time. Her father was initially thought to be Vernon Winfrey, a coal miner turned city councilman. However, Noah Robinson Sr., a farmer and World War II veteran, is also believed to be her biological father.
Oprah lived with her abusive grandmother for some time and later moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to live with her mother.
