The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are getting closer and closer to launch. Samsung has reportedly started mass production of key components for the new foldables. The company plans to start production of the devices next month, or no later than July.
According to Korean publication The Elec, Samsung aims to sell over ten million units of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 combined this year. This figure would mark a healthy increase in foldable shipments compared to last year. Research firm Omdia recently reported that the Korean company shipped 7.1 million units of Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 combined in 2021.
The ratio of the two foldable types is also expected to remain unchanged in 2022. Omdia said Galaxy Z Flip 3 sold 4.6 million units (65%) and Galaxy Z Fold 4 sold 2.5 million units (35%) last year. Samsung expects a similar ratio (70/30) in shipping the 2022 Flip and Fold series foldables.
If Samsung hits its target of selling over ten million foldables this year, foldable smartphones could have a 1% penetration in the global market for the first time ever. Global smartphone shipments could be between 1.3 and 1.4 billion units in 2022. Thus, global foldable smartphone shipments would need to be over 13 million units to reach a penetration rate of 1%. According to Omdia, foldable smartphone shipments amounted to nine million units in 2021.
Samsung could make the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 cheaper
Last year, Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 with a pretty significant price drop over their respective predecessors. Reports suggest the company is looking to lower the entry price further this year to make foldables more affordable. He is even ready to lower his profit margin to popularize “unconventional” smartphones.
Maybe, according to the new report, Samsung already maintains a lower profit margin on foldables (15%) than the flagship Galaxy S series (19%). It’s unclear whether the company will slash its profit margin further or cut manufacturing costs for a lower selling price of the 2022 foldables.
Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 in August or September this year. The Galaxy Watch 5 series is also expected to arrive alongside the new foldables. Reports suggest there will be three Galaxy Watch models this year. We should know more about these devices in the coming weeks. We will keep you posted.
