All ’90s kids can get ready to take a nostalgic ride with the return of Archie Andrews and his friends, but with a different twist. The Archies universe is getting a indian adaptation which is directed by Zoya Akhtar. The film features a cast that includes newcomers Agastya Nanda (grandson of Amitabh Bachchan), Suhana Khan (daughter of Shah Rukh Khan), and Khushi Kapoor (daughter of Sridevi). The first look at the film was released by Netflix on Saturday.
Sharing the teaser on Twitter, Netflix wrote, “The sun is out, the news is out! Come meet your new friends. I present to you the cast of The Archies, directed by the fantastic Zoya Akhtar.” The Archies is meant to be a musical set in the ’60s.
The three youngsters resemble their comic book counterparts, but with noticeable changes. Suhana sports long black hair, like Veronica, while Khushi sports bangs. Agastya did not have Archie’s famous red hair, but she did appear to have the character’s curly locks with a slight red tint.
The film’s official tagline reads: “A musical experience brimming with youth, rebellion, friendships, first loves and all things young adult, that still promises to have something for every generation. We can’t wait to see the new kids on the block!” The ad video has a music track by Ankur Tiwari playing in the background.
Suhana’s acting debut has been rumored for a long time. She first spoke about her ambitions in a 2018 Vogue interview. “I don’t think there was a time when I decided. Since she was young, she did all these accents and impressions. But my parents only realized that I was serious about acting when they saw my performance for the first time. I was playing Miranda in a school performance of The Tempest,” she said.
The Archie began production in April, with producer Reema Kagti sharing a slate from the first day of shooting, writing on Instagram, “Shooting begins on Archie, Tiger Baby’s first solo production #partnerincrime @zoieakhtar @Netflix.”
Zoya Akhtar had previously said that comics have been a part of her childhood and adolescence. “I am super excited to have the opportunity to bring The Archies to life. It was a big part of my childhood and adolescence. The characters are iconic and loved all over the world, so I’m a little nervous too. I have to make sure that the film fuels the nostalgia of a generation that grew up with comics and yet resonates with today’s young adults,” Akhtar said in a statement.
The Archies, also starring Mihir Ahuja, Dot, Vedang Raina, and Yuvraj Menda, will stream on Netflix in 2023.
