A discussion about healthcare costs in the United States has gone viral after an Indian-American shared the huge difference in medical expenses between the US and India.
The conversation started when an American woman revealed that a medicine costing nearly $1,000 (around Rs 95,000) in the United States was available for just $25 (around Rs 2,400) from an Indian manufacturer.
Inspired by her post, an Indian living in the US shared his own experience on X (formerly Twitter), explaining how affordable and fast healthcare was during a visit to India.
According to his post, he completed an entire medical checkup in a single day for about Rs 3,000 ($30).
“When I visited India a few years ago, I got my blood work done at 7 am by a healthcare worker who came to my home. I received the reports by 9 am, met a doctor at 10 am, completed multiple scans at 2 pm, got the scan results by 3 pm, had a follow-up doctor consultation at 4 pm, and received medication at my doorstep by 5 pm. All this cost me around Rs 3,000,” he wrote.
How Much Would It Cost in the US?
When another user asked how much the same process would cost in America, he estimated the total expense would be between $1,500 and $2,000 for blood tests alone.
He added that scans performed in hospitals could cost $4,000 to $5,000.
The user also explained how health insurance works for many Americans.
“I pay around $900 every month for insurance, but I still have to pay medical bills myself until I reach my yearly deductible of $4,000. Even after that, I still have to cover 20% of the costs,” he said.
According to him, the biggest difference was not just the price but also the waiting time.
“Even after paying these costs, getting all the tests, scans, and appointments completed could take anywhere from 15 to 30 days,” he added.
Social Media Praises India’s Healthcare Services
The post quickly gained attention online, with many users praising India’s healthcare system for its affordability and convenience.
One user wrote:
“If there is one thing India can compete with any Western country in, it is healthcare. Medical treatment is faster and far more affordable.”
Another commented:
“India supplies around 60% of the world’s medicines. It is called the pharmacy of the world for a reason.”
Many people also highlighted India’s growing medical tourism industry.
“People from the UK, Dubai, Singapore, and other countries regularly travel to India for MRI scans, CT scans, dental treatment, and consultations because the services are efficient and affordable,” one user said.
Others pointed out that health insurance plans in India can start at just a few dollars per month, making healthcare more accessible for many families.
Different Perspectives
While many agreed that healthcare costs in India are significantly lower, some users noted that comparisons should also consider differences in average income levels between the two countries.
One person commented:
“For many people earning in Indian rupees, healthcare costs can still feel expensive, just as medical bills do for people earning in US dollars.”
Why the Debate Matters
The viral discussion has once again highlighted the sharp differences between healthcare systems around the world. While the United States is known for advanced medical technology and facilities, many people continue to raise concerns about high costs and insurance-related expenses.
Meanwhile, India’s combination of lower treatment costs, shorter waiting times, and a large healthcare workforce continues to attract both local patients and international medical tourists.
